What Is a Snudoo? The Hoth Creature Explained

Discover the snudoo, a creature added to Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back to expand the planet's ecosystem and provide greater cinematic depth.

The ice planet Hoth, first appearing in The Empire Strikes Back, is home to a diverse, if sparse, ecosystem. While creatures like the tauntaun and the wampa are well-documented, Hoth hosts lesser-known species. Among these is the snudoo, a massive creature that blends into the snowy landscape.

Physical Characteristics of the Snudoo

The snudoo is a large, reptilian creature with a serpentine body that moves low to the ground. Its form is covered in a thick coat of shaggy, white-and-grey fur, which serves as effective camouflage against the snow and ice. A defining feature is its formidable head, equipped with a pair of large, downward-curving tusks. The snudoo rivals a tauntaun in size, though its elongated body gives it a different posture.

Habitat and Biology

Classified as a mammal-like reptile, the snudoo is native to Hoth and adapted to its extreme cold. Its thick fur provides insulation, while its slow metabolism helps conserve energy in the barren landscape. As an herbivore, the snudoo’s diet consists of vegetation found beneath the ice, using its powerful tusks and snout to unearth buried lichens and hardy tundra plants. To survive blizzards, snudoos seek refuge in natural ice caves and deep snow drifts.

Role in the Star Wars Universe

The snudoo’s most notable appearance is in the 1997 Special Edition of The Empire Strikes Back. In this updated version of the film, a snudoo can be seen moving in the background outside the Rebels’ Echo Base on Hoth. This brief appearance firmly places it within the established canon of the Star Wars universe.

Beyond its cinematic debut, the snudoo has been featured in other Star Wars media, further cementing its place in the lore. It has appeared in video games that allow players to explore Hoth, offering a direct interaction with the planet’s wildlife.

Behind the Scenes Creation

The snudoo was brought to life as a computer-generated addition for the 1997 Special Edition of The Empire Strikes Back. The creative team at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) developed the creature using digital technology that was not available during the original 1980 production. The intention was to add more visual depth and a sense of a living world to the Hoth sequences.

This process was part of a broader initiative by George Lucas to revise the original trilogy, using advancements in special effects to better realize his vision. Adding creatures like the snudoo was a way to use CGI to make Hoth feel less like a set and more like a genuine alien world.
