Sea urchins are spiny, globular marine creatures that inhabit environments from shallow rock pools to the deep sea. While their appearance might seem uninviting, these animals have many advantageous attributes. Their role extends from being a food source to influencing the structure of their habitats, impacting both human activities and the natural world.

Nutritional Profile of Sea Urchin

The edible part of the sea urchin, known as uni, is the animal’s gonads. A 100-gram serving of uni contains approximately 10 grams of protein with all essential amino acids. This portion size also delivers around 150 calories and 10 grams of fat, which is primarily polyunsaturated and contains no saturated fat.

Among these fats are omega-3 fatty acids, including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), with a 3.5-ounce serving providing about 0.5 grams. Sea urchin roe is also a source of vitamins like A and E, and minerals such as zinc, iron, and potassium. The vibrant color of uni is due to bioactive compounds called carotenoids.

Health Advantages of Consumption

The nutrients in sea urchin roe contribute to several positive health outcomes. The omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial for cardiovascular health, helping to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. These same fatty acids are also important for brain function and development.

Sea urchins perform a function within their marine ecosystems as primary grazers. They use a specialized feeding apparatus to scrape algae off rocks and other surfaces. This grazing activity is important in kelp forests and on coral reefs, where they control algae growth, preventing it from smothering other organisms and helping to maintain biodiversity.

In kelp forests, this grazing clears space, allowing for the settlement and growth of new kelp. When sea urchin populations are in balance, they help maintain the health of these underwater forests. An overabundance of urchins, often due to a decline in their natural predators like sea otters, can lead to “urchin barrens,” where kelp forests are decimated. Due to high demand and overfishing that have led to population declines, aquaculture for sea urchins has become an area of interest. Culturing sea urchins offers a way to meet market demand while reducing pressure on wild stocks. This practice also contributes to a more stable supply of this luxury seafood product.
