Salvia nemorosa, or woodland sage, is known for its dense spikes of violet or purple flowers that bloom from late spring into summer. Cultivars like ‘May Night’ and ‘Caradonna’ are celebrated for their deep colors and upright growth, making them excellent for perennial borders. Salvia sylvestris is another hardy perennial that produces a similar profusion of flower spikes.
Annual salvias provide vibrant, season-long color from spring until the first frost. Salvia splendens, or scarlet sage, is famous for its red flower spikes, though cultivars in shades of white, pink, and purple are also available. Another popular annual is Salvia farinacea, known as mealycup sage, which produces spires of blue, violet, or white flowers and is valued for its heat and drought tolerance.
