The goal is to create a modified central-leader system with well-spaced branches that allow sunlight and air to penetrate the canopy. This structure helps improve fruit quality and reduces disease risk. While some plum varieties are self-fertile, others require a second tree for cross-pollination. Harvesting the Fruit
