The Cordyline ‘Charlie Boy’ is a popular plant known for its vibrant foliage. Its sword-like leaves display a combination of deep pink and rich burgundy stripes, creating a striking statement. This plant, sometimes referred to as a Cabbage Tree or Ti Plant, offers an exotic appearance. The jewel-toned leaves make it a focal point in gardens or as a feature in a decorative container, providing year-round interest.
To maintain its vibrant leaf color, ‘Charlie Boy’ requires proper lighting. It grows best in locations that receive full sun to partial shade, as bright, indirect sunlight encourages the most vivid foliage. If you live in a hot climate, providing some shade during the afternoon can prevent the leaves from scorching. While the plant can handle some shade, its signature colors will be most pronounced with ample bright light.
This cordyline needs well-draining, fertile soil to prevent its roots from becoming waterlogged. A soil with a pH level ranging from slightly acidic to neutral, between 6.0 and 7.0, is suitable. If your garden has heavy clay or compacted soil, improve its structure by amending it with organic compost. Adding materials like perlite or sand will also enhance drainage.
Consistent moisture is important, but avoiding waterlogged conditions is just as significant. Water the plant regularly, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again. During the growing seasons of spring and summer, you may need to water once or twice a week. It’s better to water deeply to ensure moisture reaches the entire root system. In the fall and winter, reduce the frequency of watering as the plant’s growth slows.
‘Charlie Boy’ is moderately hardy and can withstand temperatures down to approximately -7°C. In regions that experience severe winters, the plant will require protection. You can wrap the plant with fleece or move potted specimens to a sheltered location like a porch or garage during the coldest periods. As the plant matures, its tolerance to frost improves.
Feeding your cordyline promotes healthy growth and vibrant foliage. During the active growing period in spring and summer, apply a balanced, liquid fertilizer once a month. A fertilizer high in potassium and phosphorus is beneficial for leaf color. Alternatively, slow-release organic options such as fish emulsion can be used. Cease fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing.
When planting ‘Charlie Boy’ in a garden, dig a hole about twice the width of the root ball and amend the soil with organic matter. Place the plant in the hole so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill the hole and water thoroughly to settle the soil. If planting more than one, space them at least 1 to 1.5 meters apart.
For container planting, select a pot with drainage holes that is slightly larger than the current one. When repotting, place the plant in the new container with fresh, well-draining potting mix and water it well. Repotting is best done in the spring every two to three years, or when the plant becomes root-bound.
