The Begonia julau is a plant sought after by collectors for its striking appearance. Originating from the Julau region of Sarawak, a Malaysian state on Borneo, this begonia is a tropical plant. Its most notable features are its dark, almost black, asymmetrical leaves, which are adorned with vibrant pink or reddish spots. This unique coloration has made it a highly desirable plant among enthusiasts.
To successfully cultivate Begonia julau, replicating its native tropical habitat is important. This plant is best suited for a controlled environment, like a terrarium, where its specific needs can be met. Its origins in the humid forests of Borneo mean it has particular requirements for light, soil, and moisture. Proper care will ensure the plant displays its full, vibrant coloration.
Begonia julau thrives in low to medium indirect light. Direct sunlight should be avoided as it can scorch the delicate leaves. An ideal location would be a spot with filtered light, mimicking the shaded understory of its natural environment.
A well-draining and airy soil mix is necessary for Begonia julau. The soil must remain moist but not waterlogged to prevent root rot. A suitable medium combines peat moss, perlite, and coco coir, which retains moisture while allowing for drainage. Some growers also add orchid substrate to improve drainage.
Watering for this begonia requires a delicate balance. The soil should be kept consistently moist, watering when the top inch or two of the soil feels dry. It’s better to use lukewarm, low-calcium water, such as rainwater or purified water, to prevent mineral buildup in the soil.
High humidity is a significant factor for growing Begonia julau successfully. It thrives in humidity levels between 60% and 80%, which is why it is an excellent candidate for a terrarium or plant cabinet. The ideal temperature range is between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C). The plant should be protected from cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F (15°C).
Propagating Begonia julau is a rewarding way to create new plants through leaf and stem cuttings. Both methods require a high-humidity environment to encourage rooting. A sealed container or terrarium is the best setting for success, and patience is needed as rooting can take time.
For leaf cuttings, select a healthy, mature leaf and place it on a moist substrate like sphagnum moss or a peat-perlite mix. To encourage root formation, you can make small cuts along the main veins on the underside of the leaf before laying it flat. The container should be covered to maintain high humidity, and new plantlets should emerge from the cuts in a few weeks to a couple of months.
Stem cuttings are another effective propagation method. Using a clean, sharp blade, take a cutting that includes at least one node—the point on the stem where leaves emerge. This cutting can be placed in water until roots develop, or it can be planted directly into a moist potting medium.

Crispy, brown leaf edges are a clear sign of insufficient humidity. Since this plant requires a very humid environment, dry air will cause the delicate leaves to suffer. The solution is to increase the ambient humidity by placing the plant in a terrarium, using a humidifier, or grouping it with other plants. Misting can provide a temporary boost but may not be enough.
Another issue is the fading of the characteristic pink spots on the foliage. This is often a reaction to the lighting conditions being too bright. While the plant needs bright, indirect light, too much direct exposure can cause its vibrant colors to wash out.
