How to Grow and Care for a Red Splash Plant

The Red Splash plant, a popular variety of the Polka Dot Plant, is known scientifically as Hypoestes phyllostachya. This plant is grown for its distinctive foliage, which features vibrant red or pink markings that splash across its green leaves. Originally from Madagascar, it has become a common houseplant valued for the color it adds to indoor spaces.

To maintain its brilliant coloration, a Red Splash plant requires bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, while insufficient light will cause the vibrant patterns to fade.

The soil should be kept evenly moist but never waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry, and use a well-draining potting mix to prevent the soil from becoming overly saturated. These plants also appreciate humidity, similar to their native environment.

During the spring and summer growing season, apply a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half-strength once a month. Maintain average room temperatures between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit and keep the plant away from cold drafts.

Pruning for a Fuller Plant

If the bright red splashes on the leaves are fading, it is a sign of inadequate light. Moving the plant to a location with brighter, filtered sunlight will restore the foliage’s vibrancy.

Drooping leaves indicate thirst. The Red Splash plant is known for its leaves becoming limp when it needs water, but a thorough watering will cause them to perk back up within a few hours.
