Proper watering is a foundational aspect of their care, ensuring they produce strong foliage and brilliant flowers. Understanding the specific needs of each type is the first step toward a successful display.
When watering garden lilies (Lilium genus), it is less about a rigid schedule and more about observing the soil. A fixed routine can lead to over- or underwatering. The most reliable method is to check the soil’s moisture by inserting a finger one to two inches deep; if the soil feels dry at this depth, it is time to water.
The goal is to water deeply but infrequently. A thorough soaking that penetrates six to seven inches into the ground encourages the lily’s roots to grow deeper, making the plant more resilient. Shallow, frequent watering keeps roots near the surface where they are more susceptible to drying out. This deep watering method ensures the entire root system has access to moisture.
Several factors influence how often you need to provide water. Sandy soils drain quickly and require more frequent watering, whereas clay soils retain moisture longer. Weather is another factor, with hot, windy, or dry conditions increasing a plant’s water needs. Lilies grown in containers also dry out much faster than those in the ground and may need watering every two to three days during peak season.
Watering needs also shift with the lily’s growth cycle. When plants are actively growing and forming buds in spring and summer, they require consistent moisture to support flower production. After blooming, as the foliage begins to yellow and the plant enters dormancy, you can reduce watering significantly. This allows the bulb to prepare for its winter rest in soil that is not waterlogged and rot-prone.
For aquatic water lilies (Nymphaea genus), care is a matter of maintaining the correct water level and quality. These plants are not watered in the traditional sense but depend on a stable aquatic habitat. The primary task is to keep the water level in the pond or container consistent, preventing it from dropping due to evaporation during hot weather.
The depth of the water above the plant’s crown is a specific consideration. Most water lily varieties thrive when their crown, the point where roots and stems meet, is submerged under 6 to 18 inches of water. This ideal range ensures the plant receives adequate sunlight for photosynthesis. If the water level drops too low, the roots can be exposed, and if it’s too high, sunlight may not reach the plant effectively.
Water quality is another component of care. Water lilies do best in still or slow-moving water, as constant splashing from fountains can damage their leaves and flowers. Clean water allows sunlight to penetrate and helps prevent harmful bacteria buildup. Stagnant or debris-filled water can lead to algae blooms and diseases like crown rot, which inhibit growth.
Yellowing leaves are a common sign of a watering problem in both garden and water lilies, though the cause differs. For garden lilies, yellowing leaves starting at the bottom of the plant often indicate overwatering and a lack of oxygen at the roots. In water lilies, yellowing leaves can be a symptom of a nutrient deficiency, crown rot, or pest infestations like aphids.
Wilting or drooping leaves can signal both under- and overwatering in garden lilies. When underwatered, the leaves become limp because the plant lacks hydration. Overwatered lilies also wilt because their waterlogged roots begin to rot, impairing their ability to absorb any water at all. Checking the soil moisture is the best way to determine the cause.
Other signs of underwatering in garden lilies include dry, brown, or crispy leaf edges and stunted growth. The plant may also fail to produce flowers or drop existing buds. For pond lilies, distress can manifest as smaller-than-usual leaves or a lack of vigor, which may point to incorrect water depth or poor water quality.
Overwatering in garden lilies can lead to more severe issues beneath the surface. Persistently wet soil can cause the bulb and stem to become soft or mushy, a clear sign of bulb rot. You might also notice mold growing on the soil’s surface or a foul smell, indicating that the roots are decaying from a lack of oxygen.
