The ZZ plant, or Zamioculcas zamiifolia, originates from Eastern Africa in regions that experience periods of significant dryness. In its natural habitat, it grows on arid landscapes, enduring cycles of drought and occasional, heavy rainfall. This environment has shaped the plant’s evolution and resilience.

To survive these dry spells, the ZZ plant developed thick, underground rhizomes that store water. This adaptation allows the plant to go for long periods without rain by drawing on its reserves, which is why it is so forgiving of infrequent watering.

Ideal Humidity Range for ZZ Plants

The ideal humidity level for a ZZ plant mirrors that of a typical household, which falls between 40% and 50%. This plant is not demanding and adapts well to the average indoor environment, so it does not require special efforts to increase ambient moisture. Its ability to tolerate drier air is one of its survival traits.

While the ZZ plant is tough, very low humidity could slow its growth or cause brown leaf tips. A more significant concern is excessively high humidity. When moisture in the air is constantly high, it slows the rate at which water evaporates from the soil, increasing the risk of overwatering. Maintaining a balanced humidity is more beneficial than trying to create a tropical environment.
