Begonias are a diverse genus of plants known for their foliage and flowers. Successful cultivation depends on providing the correct amount of moisture, and understanding how to water them properly is key to keeping them healthy.
The primary guideline for watering most begonias is to allow the top 1 to 2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. You can determine this with the “finger test” by inserting your finger into the soil. If the soil feels dry at your fingertip, it is time to water; if it feels moist, wait a few more days before checking again. This method prevents the constant soil saturation that can harm the plant’s roots.
When you water, do so thoroughly until water emerges from the pot’s drainage holes, ensuring the entire root ball gets moisture. After a few minutes, discard any water collected in the saucer. Allowing the pot to sit in standing water leads to oversaturation and deprives roots of oxygen.
The frequency of this routine will change based on the plant’s environment and the time of year. Factors like higher light, warmer temperatures, and lower humidity cause the soil to dry out more quickly. The type of pot also plays a role; porous materials like terracotta lose moisture faster than non-porous materials such as plastic. During the winter, when plant growth slows, you will need to reduce watering frequency.
While the “top inch dry” rule is a reliable starting point, slight variations exist among the different types. For instance, tuberous begonias may require more consistent moisture during their active growing season compared to rhizomatous types, which store water in their thick rhizomes. Fibrous begonias also appreciate consistent moisture to support their blooming. Observing your specific plant’s response is the best way to fine-tune your schedule.
Top watering involves pouring water directly onto the soil surface, avoiding the leaves and stems. Wet foliage can make begonias susceptible to fungal diseases like powdery mildew, so applying water to the soil is a preventative measure. This method also helps flush accumulated mineral salts from the soil.
An alternative is bottom watering, where the pot is placed in a basin of water to absorb moisture through its drainage holes. This technique encourages deeper root growth and hydrates the root ball without wetting the leaves. Once the soil surface is moist, remove the pot and let any excess water drain away.
The quality of the water you use can influence your begonia’s health. Many municipal water sources are high in minerals or treated with chlorine, which can accumulate in the soil and harm the plant. If you notice white deposits on the soil or pot, it is a sign of mineral buildup. Using filtered, distilled, or collected rainwater can prevent this. If you use tap water, allowing it to sit uncovered for 24 hours helps some chlorine dissipate.
Recognizing the signs of improper watering is helpful for correcting issues before they become severe. Overwatering manifests as yellowing leaves, particularly the lower ones, and stems that feel soft or mushy near the base. A foul, swampy odor from the soil indicates that root rot has begun.
Conversely, an underwatered begonia will appear wilted or droopy. The edges of the leaves may turn brown and feel crispy to the touch, and the soil may pull away from the sides of the pot. You might also notice that the plant’s growth has slowed or stopped altogether.
